حاول المؤلف ومن خلال هذا الكتاب تقديم عرض مختصر لأحوال السودان خلال قرن من الزمان حين سيطر عليه الحكم الأجنبي طوال نصف هذه الفترة، كما قدم خلفية لأهل البلاد ومواردها وبعض مؤسساتها. وقد أكد عبر فصول الكتاب أن النزاع المسلح في جنوب السودان والذي سيطر على مجرى الحياة السياسية في البلاد طوال النصف الأخير من القرن العشرين، يشكل العقبة الرئيسية في طريق الوحدة الوطنية والتقدم. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، أوضح المؤلف بأن مبادئ السيادة الإقليمية والاستقلال لا تزال تعتبر عالمياً أساسية أكثر من تقرير المصير، كما أنه ليس هناك اهتمام بحق الانفصال لأي مجموعة في دولة قائمة وعضو في هيئة الأمم المتحدة إذ لا يعترف القانون الدولي بحق استقلال مثل هذه المجموعة. ورغم أن الانفصال ليس أمراً محرماً، إلا أن الاتجاه العام هو أن مثل هذا التوجه يمكن التغلب عليه من الاحترام الكامل لحقوق الإنسان كما تنص عليها الأعراف الدولية، من دون تجاهل حقيقة أن جوانب السيادة الكلاسيكية الصارمة والرسمية لأمة ما لم تعد أمراً مقدساً. وغاية المؤلف من كتابه هذا المساهمة في وضع شعب السودان المتنوع الأعراق على الطريق الصحيح نحو التكامل الذي لا يمكن أن يتحقق إلا من خلال احترام حقوق الإنسان والنماء.
مما يدعو للسخرية أن هذا النزاع المأساوي في الجنوب قد يقرب الشقة مستقبلاً بين شعب السودان بسبب دروس المعاناة السياسية والعسكرية والاقتصادية. فحركة الجنوبيين الواسعة، وبأعداد كبيرة، نحو الشمال وانتشار التعليم قد تغدو عوامل مشجعّة على التقارب والتفاهم، وفي رواية متداولة فإن نفراً قليلاً من الجنوبيين الذين استوطنوا في قرية صغيرة في شمال السودان البعيد ما عادوا يتواصلون مع غيرهم هناك باللغة العربية وإنما باللهجة المحلية!
