يذهب البعض إلى حد تعريف الاستراتيجية بانها السعي وراء الحصول على ميزة تنافسية. ومن هنا، فإن القيام بالتحليل الخارجي (لتحديد الفرص والتهديدات الخارجية) والقيام بالتحليل الداخلي (لتحديد نقاط القوة ونقاط الضعف) ثم جمع نتائج التحليلين الاثنين في تحليل واحد هو تحليل سوات ليس هدفًا في حد ذاته، ولا يجب أن يكون كما يفعل الكثيرون والذين يعتبر آخر غايتهم إجراء تحليل سوات. إن تحليل سوات هو مجرد بداية. ذلك أنه من التحليل الخارجي، يمكنك تحديد المصادر الخارجية للميزة التنافسية التي يجب أن تسعى إليها استراتيجيتك أو تحققها، ونعني بذلك عوامل النجاح الأساسية للصناعة (وهي المتطلبات العامة لإشباع حاجات العميل والبقاء في المنافسة في السوق). ومن التحليل الداخلي، يمكننا تحديد المصادر الداخلية للميزة التنافسية، ونعني بها القوة الكامنة أو المحتملة التي توفرها موارد وقدرات الشركة لتأسيس ودعم الميزة التنافسية.
