يستخدم مصطلح الجغرافيا في سياقات وميادين عديدة ومتنوعة، غير أن السؤال عن ماهية الجغرافيا ما يزال يثير من البلبلة في الأوساط الأكاديمية ما يؤدي إلى انعكاسات سلبية على مناهج وطرق ومحتوى الجغرافيا المعمول بها في مدارسنا وجامعاتنا، تعليمياً وبحثياً على السواء.
في الربع الأخير من القرن العشرين تبلورت في جامعات العالم المتقدم رؤى جديدة في الجغرافيا شاع معها تداول ما يسمى "الجغرافيا الجديدة". مما يشي، لا بحلول قطيعة معرفية بين جغرافيا سابقة وجغرافيا لاحقة وحسب، وإنما يشي أيضاً بوجود جغرافيتين مختلفتين لا صلة للواحدة بالأخرى، بينما الواقع هو غير ذلك لأن المقصود بالجغرافيا الجديدة هو الجديد في الجغرافيا.
لم تجر في الجغرافيا اللبنانية أو العربية محاولات جديد ومتكاملة للعثور على طرق مقنعة تهدف إلى إزالة ما لحق بها من تشويش وبلبلة. إذ لم نقع في هذا الشأن سوى على ما تحويه بعض مقدمات لبعض مؤلفات في الجغرافيا مما لم يكن بالقدر الكافي لمواجهة مشكلة طال عليها الزمن، من هنا فإن محاولتنا بهذا الصدد هي الأولى من نوعها في الجغرافيا اللبنانية والعربية.
ما هي الجغرافيا؟ وما ميادينها ومنهاجها وأهدافها؟ ما هويتها الأكاديمية؟ وكيف استفحلت فيها الأزمات وكيف السبيل إلى تجاوزها؟ ما جدوى الجغرافيا وما جديدها؟ وكيف نجدد إنتاجها فيها؟ هذه الأسئلة وغيرها من الأسئلة المتفرعة عنها والتي يواجهها الجغرافيون على كافة المستويات، هل من الحدة بما لا يقاس بالمقارنة مع المواد الأكاديمية الأخرى مثل التاريخ أو الفلسفة أو الآداب أو الرياضيات.. على هذه الأسئلة نسعى لتقديم أجوبة ذات آفاق منفتحة، أجوبة تحض على البحث النظري المعرفي الذي طالما عانت الجغرافيا من غيابه.
