الحفاظ على العلاقات الاجتماعية في تناغم له الأسبقية على أي إنجاز شخصي، الأمر الذي يغدو فيه التميز الفردي أمرًا غير مستحسن في ذاته. أما الشعور بالرضا عن النفس فمقترن على الأرجح بالتناغم مع رغبات الجماعة والوفاء بمتطلباتها. أما المساواة في المعاملة فليست مفترضة ولا ينظرون لها كشيء مستصوب بالضرورة. لذلك لا يرون المجتمعات حاصل جمع أفراد، بل كتلة مكونة من كائنات مندغم, ونتيجة لذلك فإن مفهوم حقوق الإنسان كشيء أصيل للفرد نادر وغير موجود، وغالبًا ما تُقدّم مصلحة الجماعة ومعتقداتها وأعرافها على مصلحة الفرد وحريته وحقوقه الذاتية.
فالحقوق الفردية في الصين هي مشاركة المرء في حقوق المجتمع في مجمله، وليست امتيازًا للمرء كي يفعل ما يحلو له.
