تُظهر دينيس أ. سبلبيرغ في هذا الكتاب الأصيل والمضيء جانبًا غير معروف كثيرًا، لكنه مُهم فيما يتعلق بقصة الحرية الدينية الأميركية، وهي قصة مثيرة اضطلع الإسلام فيها بدور مدهش. ففي العام 1765م، أي قبل أحد عشر عامًا من كتابة «بيان الاستقلال» قام توماس جيفرسون باقتناء نسخة من القرآن الكريم، فكان ذلك بمنزلة الإشارة الأولى إلى اهتماماته بالإسلام الذي استمر طوال حياته، كما تابع الحصول على مزيد من الكتب حول لغات الشرق الأوسط وتاريخه والأسفار إلى المنطقة، مدونًا ملاحظات كثيرة حول الإسلام ولا سيما الأمور التي يمكن ربطها بالقانون الإنكليزي العام، المبني على العرف والعادة. فقد سعى جيفرسون إلى فهم الإسلام، على الرغم من وجود مشاعر ازدراء شخصية أساسية لديه حيال هذا الدين، وهي مشاعر كانت تستحوذ معظم معاصريه من البروتستانت في إنكلترا وأميركا. بيد أنه على خلاف الكثيرين منهم، تمكن جيفرسون في العام 1776م من تصور المسلمين بوصفهم مواطنين مستقبليين في بلاده الجديدة.
كما يدور هذا الكتاب حول موضوع: أميركا والإسلام في عصر التنوير، ويشكل بذلك محاولة استكشاف مفصلة في الموقع الذي كان ينطلق منه الغرب خلال عصر النهضة، وتُوِّج في النهاية بنظرات الآباء المؤسسين للحرية الدينية. وعلى الرغم من أن الإسلام كان دينًا بعيدًا ونظامًا عقديًا غير مفهوم بصورة مقبولة بالنسبة إلى المؤسسين، فإنهم دافعوا عن نُظم معتقدات خارجية ممثل الإسلام.
