هو دراسة تسعى إلى أن تكون موثّقة عن تأسيس الإسلام مثلما ظهر في التاريخ. ويحاول مؤلّفها، ألفريد لويس دي بريمار، رسم بعض الملامح المتميّزة لأصول الإسلام في خطوطها العريضة، وكذلك بعض ملامح تكوّنه كما تتجلّى في النصوص التأريخية الإسلامية أو من خلالها.
وميزته أنه يقدّم قراءة مزدوجة عن الإسلام الأول من داخله وخارجهمعاً، معتمداً في المقام الأول على النقوش والوثائق والنصوص المبكرة، بحيث استحقّعنوانه: تأسيس الإسلام بين الكتابة والتاريخ.
