ترافقت الصحوة الإسلامية في العالم الإسلامي بظاهرة إهتمام الغربيين بالإسلام، فقد صار الإسلام السياسي مادة للبحث والدراسة في الجامعات الغربية ومراكز البحوث الأكاديمية والإستراتيجية، وصارت البلدان الغربية تهتم كثيراً بالأحزاب والحركات السياسية وبالأفكار والتيارات الإسلامية سواء في العالم الإسلامي أو في البلدان الغربية؛ إذ سرعان ما التفتت العواصم الغربية إلى حجم الأقليات المسلمة المقيمة فيها، وتأثير هذه الأقليات ليس على تطور أفكار المسلمين في الغرب، بل أصبح تأثيرها يصل أفراد المجتمعات الغربية.
إن وجود 30 مليون مسلم في أوروبا الغربية قد أنشأ علاقات مع المجتمعات الغربية، وأوجد أعرافاً وتقاليد في مختلف مجالات الحياة الغربية، في الشارع والمدرسة والمعمل والجامعة وحتى البرلمان، أما في الإعلام الغربي فلا يخلو يوم من نشر خبر أو تقرير أو إحصائية، أو بث برنامج أو لقاء إذاعي أو تلفزيوني يتناول قضية تهم الإسلام أو المسلمين أو يستضاف فيه شخصية مسلمة تعرض آراءها وأفكارها، وتتحاور مع الجمهور الغربي.
وهذا الحضور المتزايد وطبيعة الأنظمة الغربية الديمقراطية جعل الحكومات الأوروبية تأخذ بنظر الإعتبار الأقلية المسلمة في بلداتها، ما عزز النشاط الإسلامي، فأنجذب كثير من الغربيين إلى الإسلام، واعتنق الإسلام عدد من المفكرين الغربيين منهم الفيلسوف الفرنسي روجيه غارودي، والعالم والطبيب الفرنسي موريس بوكاي؛ والكاتب النمساوي محمد أسد، والدبلوماسي الألماني مراد هوفمان... إذ يقدر عدد المسلمين الأوروبيين، أي الذين اعتنقوا الإسلام، بأكثر من مائة ألف أوروبي.
