نشأت الدراسة اللغوية، العربية بعامة، والدراسة الصوتية خاصة نتيجة لاحتياجات عملية تتصل بتلاوة القرآن الكريم وتفهم أحكامه. ثم تعليم العربية لمن دخل الإسلام من غير العرب ومن ثم فليس غريباً أن تستند معظم الروايات التاريخية أول نشاط عند العرب لقارىء من قراء القرآن الكريم هو أبو الأسود الدؤلى (ت69 هـ) الذى استخدم النقط ليرمز به إلى ظواهر صوتية اعتمد فى رصدها على الملاحظة المباشرة لحركات الفم بما لها من صلة بنطق هذه الأصوات بل لقد كان معظم النحاة واللغويين الأوائل من القراء. وقد مهد هؤلاء السبيل لظهور علم الأصوات عند العرب بفضل ما لاحظوه وما أثاروه من مشكلات تتعلق بنطق بعض الكلمات فى آيات القرآن الكريم نتيجة لإختلاف اللهجات العربية واختلاف المصاحف، وما لاحظه بعضهم أيضاً من تغير فى نطق بعض أصوات العربية على ألسنة الأعاجم والمولدين. غير أن تلك الملاحظات الصوتية التى أثارها القراء وعلماء اللغة والتى تراكمت خلال قرن كامل لم تأخذ صورة الدراسة المنظمة إلا على يد الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدى. الذى يعد صاحب أول دراسة صوتية.
