إذا كان القدماء قد تناولوا ظاهرة الغموض ودرسوها على النحو الذي سنراه في هذا البحث، فإن عناية علماء اللغة والأسلوب والنقاد الأوروبيين في العصر الحديث، لم تكن أقل من عناية القدماء في الإهتمام بهذه الظاهرة، وهذا البحث يحاول أن يعرض أولاً لجوانب ظاهرة الغموض عند القدماء وبخاصة من الجانب اللغوي، كيف رصدوها وحللوها، وما المصطلحات الدالة عليها عندهم، وما مظاهرها على مستوى المفردات والتراكيب، وذلك في إطار من النظرية اللغوية الحديثة، وسنرى من خلال هذا البحث كيف اتفق القدماء والمحدثون في رصد مظاهر الغموض والتعليل له، وإن اختلفت طرق التعليل والتحليل، ولذلك قسمت البحث إلى تمهيد وستة فصول، جعلت التمهيد فيه لعرض ودراسة الإطار العام الذي جرى فيه تصور القدماء والمحدثين لظاهرة الغموض ومظاهرها وأسبابها، أما الفصول فهي كالتالي: (الفصل الأول: الغموض بين غريب القرآن ومشكله، الفصل الثاني: الأصوليون والغموض، الفصل الثالث: الغموض بين اللغويين والنحاة، الفصل الرابع: البلاغيون والغموض، الفصل الخامس: الغموض بين النطق والكتابة، الفصل السادس: الغموض والتركيب النحوي).
