كان القاموس المحيط -وما يزال- من أشهر المعاجم العربية القديمة وقد هاجمه الشدياق ليبين أن القصور ناتج عن وضع المعاجم وطريقة تأليفها لا من اللغة وخصائصها، وقد توصل بهذا النقد إلى الدعوة لوضع معجم عربى حديث يسهل الرجوع ليه والبحث فيه، وكان من أهم ما نادى به فى هذا الصدد، الا يقتصر المعجم العربى على المفردات العربية القديمة وحدها بل يضاف إليها ما استعمله العلماء والكتاب والشعراء بعد عصور الاحتجاج يقول فى مقدمة كتابه الجاسوس "أحببت أن أبين فى هذا الكتاب من الأسباب ما يخص أهل العربية فى عصرنا هذا على تأليف كتاب فى اللغة يكون سهل الترتيب واضح التعاريف شاملا للألفاظ التي استعملها الأدباء والكتاب وكل من اشتهر بالتأليف"
وهذه الدعوة من الشدياق إلى إعادة النظر فى المعاجم العربية مادة وترتيبا دعوة لها ما يبررها فى عصر الشدياق -وما زالت حتي يومنا هذا- أما أسبابها فى عصره فيوضحها لنا بقوله "فان هذا اللسان قد تضوع نشره.. إلا أن السنة الأجانب زاحمته في هذا العصر... لأن ترتيب كتب لغاتهم أسهل والوصول إليها أعجل ولاسيما أنها قليلة المشتقات وليس فى تعريف ألفاظها كبير اختلاف فى الروايات، أما من يتعاطون منا التجارة ويحملون عبء الإمارة، فانهم يزعمون أن اللغة العربية لا تصلح فى هذا الزمان لهاتين الخطتين فلابد من الاستعانة بكلام الأجانب"، لذلك يرى ضرورة تنمية الثروة اللفظية وإعادة ترتيبها حتي يسهل استعمالها.
لذلك سوف نقسم هذا البحث إلى ثلاثة أقسام أساسية وهي: الشدياق ودراسة المعنى المعجمى، الشدياق وفن صناعة المعجم، الشدياق وتنمية مادة المعجم العربى، وفيما يلى سنحاول أن نتناول كل قسم من هذه الأقسام بالدراسة من خلال ما كتبه الشدياق وذلك فى ضوء ما توصل إليه علماء اللغة فى العصر الحديث من نتائج وما أذاعوه من آراء ولعلى بذلك أكون قد أسهمت فى الكشف عن جهد معجمى لعالم من علماء المعاجم العربية أحب اللغة العربية ووجد ارتياحا غريزيا كما يقول منذ نعومة أظافره لقراءة الكلام الفصيح وإمعان النظر فيه.
