رحلت أم كلثوم فإذا جميع الصحف والمجلات فى مصر والعالم العربى تصدر أعداداً خاصة عن أم كلثوم.. وقد قرأتها جميعها فإذا بها فيما يتعلق بنشأة أم كلثوم تدور حول هذه الذكريات أو المذكرات حتى العشرين سنة الأولى من حياتها ثم تقف.. فإن أضافت فإنما هى أخبار من هنا وهناك حول زياراتها الأخيرة من أجل المجهود الحربى مما هو قريب ملموس.. وهنا يأتى دور هذا الكتاب فقد أكمل معها رحلة العمر كله.. ومن ورائه العصر الذى عاشت فيه. وكتابى الثانى عن أم كلثوم شرعت فيه فى منتصف الستينات.. واستغرقت كتابته ست سنوات.. رجعت فيها إلى محفوظات دار الكتب بالقلعة وأرشيف الأهرام وأخبار اليوم حيث قرأت جميع الصحف والمجلات المصرية منذ صدورها -بعضها فى القرن التاسع عشر- حتى الستينات من القرن العشرين. ثم أدخرته فترة حتى يسكن الجهد المبذول، وحتى أستطيع أن أعاود قراءته برؤية جديدة.. وهنا أضفت وحذفت وغيرت.. بما يحقق هدفى منه، فقد أردت له أن يكون جامعاً. وأن يكون مرجحاً. فليس هذا الكتاب حديثاً وأخباراً جذابة وريبورتاجات صحفية ولكنه حديث التاريخ فى حقبة من أهم مراحله امتدت على طريق الفن العربى مائة سنة طوى الفن فيها صفحات وفتح صفحات أخرى تامتلأت بالأحداث والتطورات والأسماء والأماكن والعهود والملامح والسير. أم كلثوم فى هذا الكتاب خيط طويل من خيوط كثيرة متوازية حيناً ومتشابكة أحياناً تلتقى وتتفرق وتتشابه وتتميز ولكنها كلها بعد هذا، بمجموعها، بمتناقضاتها واتساقاتها تكون النسيج العريض الذى نسميه الفن العربى الحديث.
