فكيف نضع حدا فاصلا جماليا بين القصة القصيرة والرواية القصيرة؟ هل هو تداخل النوعين كما لوأن الإبداع مقصور على الجمع بين عنصرين متفرقين جاهزين معا فيما يسمى القصة الشعرية أو الرواية التي تتالف من قصص قصيرة؟ لن نجد عند نجيب محفوظ جمعا بين عناصر أعدت من قبل يعيد جمعها بطريقة جديدة بل هو يطور أنواعا فرعية من القصة القصيرة وأنواعها فرعية جديدة من الروايات وتظل القصة القصيرة عنده تختلف عن الرواية لا في الطول بل في البنية والتصور.
