عُرِفَ التّراث الإسلاميّ بكثرة علومه وتنوّعها. ومن علومه المتميزة: علم الكلام بوصفه نظراً في أصول المعتقد، وعلم أصول الفقه بوصفه نظراً في قواعد استنباط أحكام الشريعة. فهما يهتمّان بقُطبَي الإسلام: العقيدة والشريعة أو الإيمان والعمل. ثمّ إنّ كُلاًّ منهما كان ينظر في إحدى كفَّتَي الإسلام بمنهج تأصيليّ مخصوص يجوس خلال تفاصيل القضايا بحثاً عن جذورها المبدئيّة، وتقنيناً لأمّهات قواعدها.
لذللك وُصِفا على سبيل التَّثنية الجامعة ب"الأصلَين". فهُما عَلَمَانِ في موضوعيهما، من تَبَرَّزَ فيهما حَظِيَ بمَقام السَّبقِ بين العلماءالذين كانوا يتنافسون في تحصيلهما طلباً وتصنيفاً.
وهما بناءً على ذلك يتكاملان في النظر إلى أصول الديانة من أبرز أقطارها.
لكنهما لم يكونا متكاملين عن بُعْدٍ تكامل القطبين في تثبيت التوازن البيئيّ، بل كانا يتداخلان بحيث يَلِجُ أحدهما الآخرَ مسافاتٍ معرفيّةً تمتد أو تقصُر، ليؤثّر أو يتأثر، ويؤصّل أو يتأصّل.
ومع أن كلاً منهما أُحدث في الملة لمقاصد مخصوصة، وأنبتته في رحم التراث عوامل غير عوامل قرينه، فانهما لم يلبثا ان التقيا بعد انفصال حين كانا يبحران في مراقي النضج والترشد.لكن هذا التدخل لم يسلم - قديماً وحديثاً -من النقد والإستشكال لأسباب هي التي دفعتنا إلى إنجاز هذا البحث.
فقد كان من الأصوليين من غلبت عليهم صنعة الكلام حتى استصحبوها في أمّهات المسائل، بل في دقائقها، وكانوا يعقدون أحياناً ما يشبه مجالس المناظرة الكلامية تحقيقاً منهم للحقّ الذي يرونه في مواطن السّجال، حتى اذا شعروا أنّهم تكلفوا ما لا يليق بعلم الأصول، اعتذروا بأهمية المسألة، أو أحالوا ما تركوه من توسّع على ما فصّلوه في كتبهم الكلامية.
زكان فيهم من يميل الى الفقه، ويركّز على إبانة القواعد الأصولية بما يراه أكثر إفادة في فنّ الفروع، لكنّ سلطان علم الكلام كان يدعوه إلى مائدة مبادئه فلا يجد بدّاً من أن ينهل منهما لِماماً بالقدر الذي يراه مغنياً في توضيح إشكال أو دفع شبهة.
واجتهدت طائفة في التوفيق وفاء بحقّ العلمين، فأحدثوا منهجاً جامعاً اصطُلِحَ على تسميته ب"طريقة الجمع". وهكذا صار علم الكلام أساساً في تقسيم المناهج الأصولية إلى كلاميّ، وفقهيّ، وجامع.
