لم يكن أحد يعرف شيئا عن السومريين قبل مئتي عام. أما اليوم وبعد اطلاعنا على المكتشافت الأثرية الهائلة في منطقة الشرق العربي (العراق) عرفنا أن السومريين هم أول شعب تاريخي قدم للإنسانية أكبر الإنجازات الحضارية. فهو مبدع أولى الكتابات قبل 5000 عام، والتي ساعدت الإنسان على الخروج من عتمة عصور ما قبل التاريخ والإنتقال به إلى فجر التاريخ. وكان لهم باع طويل في النحت والرسم والموسيقى.
أما عن الحكمة أو الفلسفة - إن صح التعبير - فحدث ولا حرج. حيث نكتشف عندهم نظم الحياة وفلسفتها. وقد عبر السومري عن تجاربه ومعاناته اليومية بحكم وأمثال لا تخلو أحيانا من نقد إجتماعي وروح مرحة. تعبر بمجموعها عن فلسفة إجتماعية ونفسية خاصة. فيها الكثير من المعرفة والفهم للطبيعة الإنسانية.
ومهما كان الأمر، ففي هذا البحث المقتضب من (الحكمة والأمثال) أو بالأحرى (الفلسفة السومرية)، التي رافقت الإنسان العراقي منذ وجوده حتى اليوم. هي وليدة الخبرة الطويلة والتفكير المتواصل.
وبعبارة أخرى، إن الحكمة السومرية، هي الحكمة الحقة. والحكمة الحقة هي الإنسانية الحقة. والإنسانية الحقة هي الحكمة الحقة.
