الأعشى هو ميمون بن قيس بن أسد بن ربيعة بن نزار، وهو أحد الأعلام من شعراء الجاهلية وفحولهم وتقدم على سائرهم، عده ابن سلام في الطبقة الأولى من شعراء الجاهلية. وهو أول من سأل بشعره. قال عنه أبو عمرو بن العلاء: شاعر مجيد كثير الأعاريض والافتنان. ويروي أن عبد الملك بن مروان قال لمؤدب أولاده: أدبهم برواية شعر الأعشى فإنه ما كان أعذب بحره وأصلب صخره.
وإذا عدنا إلى ديوانه رأيناه مميزاً كماً ونوعاً، وإذا عدنا إلى شخصه رأيناه يجمع من جليل الصفات وقبيح الخصال ما يجعله وطن التناقضات العجيبة، حتى ليصعب عليك أن تقف عند خليقة من خلائقه من غير إلمام بنقيضها، وهو على ذلك شاعر القبيلة بمنظار عصره بكل ما تحمله هذه العبارة من بعد قبلي وحس اجتماعي، وتواصل إنساني.
وفي هذا الكتاب شرح لديوان "الأعشى الأكبر" جمعه عبد الرحمن المصطاوي، وفي البداية قام الشارح بتدوين ترجمة موجزة للشاعر تحدث فيها عن نسبه وكنيته، طبقته في الشعراء، هاجسه، خبره في الإسلام، مفردات أبياته، أخباره ونسبه، حديث الشعبي عنه، هريرة عشيقته. ثم عمد إلى تجميع قصائده مرتباً قوافيها الفبائياً، مختاراً بعد ذلك عنواناً لكل قصيدة من خلال أبياتها، ثم مضى بذكر مناسبة كل قصيدة وغرضها من مدح أو رثاء أو غزل أو هجاء...
الشعر ديوان العرب، وسجلّ حفظت به الأنساب والأيام. وها هو المحقق يقدم لنا ديوان الأعشى الأكبر أحد فحول الشعراء في العصر الجاهلي، قيل فيه: إنه أشعر الناس إذا طرب، وقيل فيه: إنه صناجة العرب لجودة شعره.
قدّم المحقق للديوان بترجمة للأعشى الأكبر وكنيته: أبو بصير، وألحق بها أخباره نقلاً عن كتاب الأغاني. أما العمل في الديوان فبدأه بضبط الأشعار وبيان بحور القصائد والقطع الشعرية، ثم شَرَحَ المفردات الغريبة. كما وضع عناوين للقصائد، اختيرت من القصائد نفسها.
