لا يكاد يجد الناظر في أبحاث المعاصرين سوى فصول ومقالات هنا وهناك في تضاعيف كتب النقد الأدبي أو بمناسبة التعريف بمن ألفوا في تاريخ الأدب أو درس نواح من إنتاجهم. وهي فصول ومقالات تتفاوت قيمة واقتراباً من معالجة المسائل التي تطرحها الكتابة في مادة تاريخ الأدب العربي. ولعل أبرزها الفصل الذي خصصه الدكتور عطية عامر من كتيبه "دراسات في الأدب العربي الحديث" لقضايا التأريخ للأدب فقد ألمّ فيه إلماماً حسناً، على ما توفاه فيه إيجاز، بجوانب مهمة من خصائص المؤلفات التي تؤرخ للأدب العربي.
لقد ظل التأليف في مادة تاريخ الأدب العربي إذن محتاجاً إلى دراسة مستقلة تتناول قضاياه المفهومية والمنهجية بالتحليل وظلت أبرز الكتب فيه مفتقرة إلى عناية الباحثين. وهذا قد يتضارب مع ما كان لها من قيمة استعمالية كبيرة ومن أثر فعّال في تكييف نظرة جمهور القارئين إلى التراث الأدبي.
من هنا تأتي هذه الدراسة في قضايا تاريخ الأدب العربي، والتي تعتمد أكثر المؤلفات فيه شهرة بين الناس، لأنه ومما لا شك فيه أن درس تلك المؤلفات يعرّف القارئ والباحث عن كثب بالمصادر التي أسهمت إسهاماً وافراً في تكوين أجيال وأجيال من قراء الأدب ومنتجيه.
