لم يسمع ولدا غولدا ماير ولا كاتب سيرتها قطّ عن علاقة سرّية لها مع فلسطيني دامت من العام 1929 حتّى العام 1933، أي في الفترة عينها الّتي تركت فيها كلّ شيء لتكرّس حياتها لإلتزامها الصهيوني، ولم ترد عائلة عشيقها الفلسطيني أن تسمع شيئاً عن علاقة سرّية له مع إحدى أبرز الشخصيّات السياسية في كيان العدوّ؛ إلا أنّ صاحب البيت الزهري في حيفا كان يحكي قصّته لابنة أخته وكاتمة أسراره، الّتي أقصاها أهلها إلى القاهرة في زواج مدبّر، فشاركت خالها غربته عن العائلة الفلسطينية البيروتية الثرية الّتي كانا ينتميان إليها.
هل هذه القصّة واقعية؟ إنّها قصة "شبه مستحيلة"، يقول الكاتب، مُدركاً أنّ جوهر الواقع ومكان الرواية يكمنان في كلمة "شبه" هذه، الّتي تمثّل "المساحة الصغيرة حيث يحدث ما لا يجب أن يحدث".
إنّها قصة حبّ ممنوع، يسردها لنا الكاتب في إطارها التاريخي، مستعيداً الأحداث والمأساة الّتي طبعت أرض فلسطين منذ عشرينيّات القرن الماضي وحتّى نكبة الــ 1948.
