"الإسلام اليوم وغدًا في نيجيريا" ذلك هو عنوان بحثنا هذا، ولسوف نسرد القلم بالإطناب في الكلام على جزء من أجزاء هذه الكلمات الأربع في صلب البحث. ولكننا نأخذ بأطراف كل كلمة في هذه المقدمة ونقول: الإسلام هو ذلك الدين الذي يطيع به العبد ربه، ويتقرب به إلى مولاه في سلوكه اليومي وعباداته وعاداته وتقاليده ومعاملاته مع الناس. وهو أيضًا النظام الذي وضعه الخالق لعباده، الذين رزقهم من الطيبات وفضلهم على كثير من خلقه، لكي يسيروا على هذا النظام في سائر مجالات الحياة من سياسة وتجارة وحكومة وقضاء. واليوم هو القسم الحاضر القريب من الزمان.
ونحن نصطلح على الحرب العالمية أن تكون حدًا فاصلًا بين الماضي والحاضر كما تفصل الأيام والشهور والأعوام بين الدهور والأزمان. أم الغد فهو ما لا ينتهي مما يستقبل من الزمان، منه القريب الذي يحده طلوع الشمس ومنه البعيد الذي يمتد إلى قرون. أما كلمة نيجيريا فهي خاصة بالحدود الجغرافية السياسية، الحاضرة المسماة نيجيريا، ولكنها متجاوزة هذه الحدود الجغرافية إلى ما حول نهر النيجر فيما يطلق عليه غرب أفريقيا التي كانت تعتبر إقليمًا واحدًا فيما قبل الاستعمار. أما هذا البحث الذي يدور حول الإسلام اليوم وغدًا في نيجيريا بما فيها غرب أفريقيا وما يشابهها في العالم الإسلامي، فلابد من ربط البحث بالماضي لكي يتضح لنا الحاضر ويبدو لنا الطريق إلى المستقبل واضحًا جليًا.
