طُبع كتاب "الإسلام في نيجيريا" لأول مرة عام (1369ه / 1950م) لأجل سد الفراغ في المكتبات عن الإسلام في إفريقيا، وخاصة بلاد السودان الغربي أو بلاد "التكرور" – نيجيريا – التي دخلها الإسلام منذ نحو ألف سنة مضت، لتصبح جزءاً من العالم الإسلامي، ومنطقة ذات ثقافة مكتملة وحضارة مزدهرة. ولكنها انطوت منذ عصور في زوايا المجاهيل من اثر ما أصابها من تدهور وانحطاط وحروب؛ فجاء الكتاب ليكشف اللثام عن هذه الجهات المجهولة، ويثلج بعض الصدور الغليلة. ويبيّن الدور والنقلة اللتين أحدثهما الإسلام في نيجيريا منذ دخوله تلك البلاد، وتاريخ ذلك وتأثيره على حياة الناس ومعيشتهم وثقافتهم.
كذلك يتناول الكتاب دور واحد من أبرو مصلحي هذه المنطقة إلا وهو الشيخ عثمان بن فوديو الفلاني وآثاره الإصلاحية، والذي يعتبر المؤلف امتداداً لمدرسته.
