حفلت المكتبة العربية الحديثة بالمؤلفات العديدة عن الأمثال الشعبية التي تعددت أساليبها واختلفت فبعض المؤلفين جمع الأمثال جمعاً عشوائياً، وبعضهم جمعها ورتبها ترتيباً معجمياً. وآخرون جمعوا الأمثال وصنفوها أبجدياً أو موضوعياً، وشرحوا ما غمض من مانيها ومدلولاتها. وقد أسهمت هذه الكتب كلها في تنشيط وإحياء هذا الجانب المهم من التراث. ورغم أن مؤلف هذا الكتاب"جمانه طه" قد استفادت من بعض هذه الجهود، إلا أنه قد تميز عنهم بكون كتابه هذا نسيج متماسك، لأنه يتمتع بخصوصية تميزه عن العديد من كتب الأمثال. إذ إن ما في هذا الكتاب ليس فقط دراسة تاريخية مقارنة، بل فيه أيضاً كمم من الأمثال العربية المعروفة على مستوى بلدان الوطن العربي كافة، إلى جانب هذا يتميز بتوضيحه للخلفية الاجتماعية لكل مثل جاء به. ولا نغالي إذا قلنا أن هذا الكتاب هو الموسوعة الوحيدة التي اشتملت على هذا الكنز الذي تناقلته الألسنة العربية أباً عن جد وخلفاً عن سلف فجاء متميزاً عن الكتب المتشابهة له، والتي كان معظمها محلياً، ولم تكن يمثل هذا الشمول. لقد استطاعت جمانه طه -أن تستقطب عبر عشر سنوات من الجهد والبحث والسفر-كل الأمثال العربية، التي بدت في معظمها متشابهة، إلا في بعض الفروقات في اللهجات المحلية، وأظهرت من جهة أخرى، وحدة الذاكرة الشعبية العربية التي انطلقت من نبع واحد، مما يؤكد أن المشاعر والحكم والأمثال واحدة في هذا الوطن، وقد هونت المؤلفة على القراء بتقديم هذا الكتاب حسب الأحرف الأبجدية أولاً، ثم أعطته عناوين فرعية تدل على معاني هذه الأمثال والمناسبات التي قيلت فيها، كما قيل في التأسف والنوم، أو الاستحالة، أو البله، أو الانتهازية، أو الاضطرار والتماس العذر، أو التحدي، أو حسن التصرف.
