حفلت المكتبة العربية الحديثة بالمؤلفات العديدة من الأمثال الشعبية التي تعددت أساليبها واختلفت ولكنها أسهمت جميعها في تنشيط وإحياء هذا الجانب المهم من التراث. وقد أفادت المؤلفة في تأليف كتابها الذي تقلب صفحاته من جهودِ من سبقوها في هذا المجال، إلا أن كتابها موسوعية الأمثال هو نسيج وحده، إذ إنه يتمتع بخصوصية تميزه عن العديد من كتب الأمثال.
يرتكز منهج الكتاب على موازنة الأمثال الشعبية السورية بالأمثال العربية القديمة والمولدة والشعبية، وأحياناً بالمثل الإنكليزي، وقد اختارت المؤلفة الأمثال السورية بعناية لتخدم معاني الفصول، وصنفتها تصنيفاً موضوعياً بالترتيب الأبجدي، فجاء تصنيفها على الأسلوبين معاً، النوعي والهجائي، مما يسهل الدراسة والرجوع، بالإضافة إلى ذلك ضمّنت المؤلفة الكتاب دراسة تحليلية تتناول نشأة المثل ومعناه، وتطوره التاريخي، مستنتجة الخطوط العريضة للعلاقات بين الأمثال، معالجةً دلالاتها معالجة غير متخصصة لأن الغرض هو الانتقاء والتدوين.
وقد قسم الكتاب إلى 177 فصلاً، اختير تسميات الفصول من معاني الأمثال، وفصول حملت أسماء الفصول والشهور لتأثيرها المباشر على حياتنا أرضاً وزرعاً وماءً، وفصلاً للمتفرقات من الأمثال ذات الصبغة المحببة، وفصلاً للعبارة وفصلاً للقياس، وفصلاً للتفضيل، وفصلاً خاصاً بالأمثال الساخرة الضاحكة التي تحمل البسمة حيناً والمرارة والإفزاع أحياناً، كما أفرد مكاناً لأمثال بعض الأمم القديمة لقيمتها الإنسانية والحضارية. وقد قامت المؤلفة بترجمة الأمثال والأقوال والحكم الآكادية والفرعونية والسريانية عن نصوصها الإنكليزية.
في هذا الكتاب نطل على الأمثال في مدارها الحضاري القديم كأمثال السومريين والفراعنة والآراميين، ونتبين أن الأمثال ذات مجال ومدى كوني، وأن التواصل الإنساني بين الشعوب موجود ومستمر.
يمتاز هذا الكتاب، بأنه غير موجه لفئة من الناس دون غيرها، وانما هو للناس جميعهم، على مختلف مستوياتهم الثقافية والاجتماعية. ومما لا شك فيه أن هذا الجهد الثقافي سيسد فراغاً في مكتبتنا العربية وفي حياتنا الثقافية.
