تعد الأمثال والحكم من أكثر الأشكال التعبيرية الشعبية إنتشاراً، ولا تخلو منها أية ثقافة، إذ نجدها تعكس مشاعر الشعوب على اختلاف طبقاتها وانتماءاتها، وتجسد أفكارها وتصوراتها وعاداتها وتقاليدها ومعتقداتها ومعظم مظاهر حياتها، وللمثل أهمية في الثقافة الإسلامية، فنجد إبن الأثير يشير إلى أهميتها وهو يحيط المتصدي لدراسة الأمثال علماً أن "الحاجة إليها شديدة، وذلك أن العرب لم تضغ الأمثال إلا لأسباب أوجبتها وحوادث اقتضتها، فصار المثل المضروب لأمر من الأمور عندهم كالعلامة التي يعرف بها الشيء".
وما بين أيدينا موسوعة تضم روائع الحكم والأمثال والأقوال المأثورة التي تعكس مختلف مظاهر الحياة، في شتى أنحاء العالم، تشكل بمجملها إرثاً حضارياً لا يستهان به يضم حكم وأمثال وأقوال مأثورة لفلاسفة وحكماء تبدو صالحة لكل زمان ومكان.
