في هذا الكتاب يسجل الرحالة الأكاديمي والمدير السابق لمتحف علم الجناس في مدينة لا يبزغ –ألمانيا، وكذلك زوجته رينانه، انطباعاتهما عن حياة البدو من خلال الرحلة التي قام بها إلى ربوع قبيلة شمر المتواجدة في العراق، بعد ان استضافهم الشيخ مشعان الجربا الذي تولى مشيخة قبيلة شمر في أثناء توثيق مادة الكتاب -1962م، حيث قدم الشيخ كل التسهيلات للرحالة الذي أقام في بوع القبيلة أثناء دراسته الميدانية هذه.
أما أهم ما أعجب به هذا الرحالة وزوجته والتي يسلط الكتاب الأضواء عليها هي النخوة والشهامة التي ينفرد بها الإنسان العربي عمن سواه من الشعوب الأخرى...
تعتبر قبيلة شمر من القبائل العربية القحطانية الكبرى، والرئاسة فيها لآل الجرب نزحت من موطنها الأصلي نجد إلى العراق عام 1791م، وأخبارها مشهورة في "عيون الأخبار لابن قتيبة، "اللباب لإبن الأثير"، وفي سجلات الحكومة البريطانية، فضلاً عن مصادر ومراجع متعددة باللغة الإنكليزية لرحالة بريطانيين وهذا ما يؤكد عراقتها وانتشارها جغرافياً في الجزيرة العربية وأوسطها في العراق ونجد وسوريا.
لأجل ذلك جاءت هذه الدراسة الميدانية لتضيئ على مظاهر وسلوكيات هامة انفردت فبيلة شمر نذكر منها: 1- إلى منطقة القيثارة للقاء الشيخ مشعان، العالم النسوي في شمر بعيون ريناته "ريمة"، المهر، إعداد الطعام، الوشم، تعدد الزوجات، الضيافة البدوية الصارمة وصعوبة التكيف معها، قصص الحروب بين القبائل... الخ.
