هذا بحث في البنية الأسطورية لسيرة الملك سيف بن ذى يزن، وهي سيرة من سيرنا الشعبية التي تأخر اهتمام الدارسين والباحثين العرب بها؛ والذي بدأ إبان الصحوة العربية لدراسة تراثنا الشعبي في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، أو قبل ذلك بقليل، ولا يزال الاهتمام بها مستمراً وذلك لما تحويه من مادة غفيرة- تحمل موروثاً حضارياً- جديرة بالدراسة والتحليل، كما أنها جزء لا يتجزأ من التراث الأدبي العربي؛ فهي تصور آلام الشعب الذي أفرزها، وتعبر عن آماله وقيمه، وتعكس الأنماط الفكرية والسلوكية لأفراده وجماعاته.
وعن المنهج الذي اتبعه الباحث في الدراسة، فهو يسير في اتجاهين: الاتجاه الأول: اتجاه أنثروبولوجي، يبحث في أصول العناصر الأسطورية المستخلصة من السيرة، أو المصادر القريبة التي يمكن لراوى السيرة أن يكون قد استقى مادته منها، الاتجاه الثاني: اتجاه فني، يقوم علي دراسة النص دراسة شكلية، بغية التوصل إلي القوانين التي تحكمه، والكشف عن علاقة الأجزاء "العناصر الأسطورية" بالوحدة الكلية للعمل الفني، وعلاقة هذا الشكل بالمضمون الذي تحويه السيرة ثم دراسة لغة السيرة في ذلك الإطار الأسطوري، ويحتوى هذا البحث علي تمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وهي: "العناصر الأسطورية مصادرها ووظيفتها في السيرة، بنية السيرة، لغة السيرة ولعلاقتها بالعناصر الأسطورية".
