كرّس كيرككورد نفسه تماما في العامين الأخيرين، قبل وفاته، للنظر إلى قضية علاقة الفرد بالدين. ووجه لها النقد الشديد متهماً الكهنة ومؤسسة الكنيسة بتحويل الدين إلى مصدر عيش وأداة للحصول على المنافع والمكاسب والنفوذ والسلطة، وتفريغ الدين من محتواه الروحي.
كيرككورد يطرح تصوراً خالصاً يكان يكون مثالياً غير ممكن التحقيق في الواقع عن المتدين المسيحي. فهو يطالبه أن يوظّف كل حياته ويعاني مثلما عانى المسيح لكي يصل لله، كما أنه وجّه نقداً صارماً إلى الرهبان الذين يتخذون من الطقوس الدينية كالتعميد والزواج وغيرها لحرف الفرد عن الدين الحقيقي. واعتبر أن تلك الطقوس هي مجرّد مهرجانات يراد بها حرف الحشد والجموع عن حقيقة الدين، والاكتفاء بالتديّن، إذ أنه يميز بين الدين، الذي هو في نهايته، فردية تماما، وبين التدين الذي يقوم الرهبان ومؤسسة الكنيسة للدعاية له من أجل كسب أتباع جدد.
ويقول كيرككورد أن الدين لا يحتاج إلى الحشود أو الطقوس الدينية، ورأى أن الإيمان قضية فردية تماماً. كما أنّه عارض تدخّل الدولة بقضايا الدين أو تحالف الكنيسة والمهنة مع الدولة، وحصول الرهبان على مكاسب من الدولة عن طريق نشر المسيحية. واعتبر أنّ تدخّل الدولة في المسألة الدينية بمثابة إساءة وتزييف حقيقي للإيمان والدين.
وهكذا يمكن القول انّ كيرككورد قد صاغ في هذه المقالات بصورة واضحة موقفه النقدي تجاه مؤسسة الكنيسة والطريقة التي تجري بها الدعوة إلى المسيحية والتدين، وليس كما يعتقد البعض ضد المسيحية ذاتها.
