تتجه حضارتنا المادية- كما يسميها علماء أحوال البشر- نحو الجماعية (الشيوع) والإتحادية، لكن حضارتنا الروحية، شأنها شأن أيديولوجيتنا، ما زالت، من الناحية الأخري، مشبعة بمثل الفردية وقيمها المستمدة من العصر ما قبل الصناعي وما قبل التكنولوجي. وتمتد جذورها الروحية إلى ديانة العصور الوسطي، التي أكدت الطبيعة النهائية للروح الفردية، وركزت مأسات الحياة حول مصير تلك الروح. أما مفاهيمها الرسمية والقانونية فقد تكونت وصيغت في العصر الإقطاعي.
وقد سبقت هذه الفردية الروحية والفلسفية، نشوء الصناعة الحديثة وعصر الآلة، لكنها كانت السياق الذي عملت فيه الآلة. فكثيراً ما يخفي خضوع الفرد، ظاهرياً، للمنظمات والشرائع الموطدة، عن الأنظار الوجود الحيوي لفردية عميقة الجذور. ولكن حقيقة أن الكنيسة كانت المنظمة المسيطرة، يجب أن تذكرنا بأن الهدف الأسمي من وجودها كان لتأمين خلاص الفرد ونجاته. ولما كان هذا الفرد يفهم على أنه روح، وكانت الأهداف التي تعمل من أجلها هذه المنظمة- أي الكنيسة- مؤجلة إلى حياة سرمدية أخري، فإن هذه الحقائق تخفى عن الإدراك المعاصر الفردية المبطنة.
