يدرس هذا الكتاب نشأة المفارقة وتطورها في الغرب والتراث العربي، ثم يقوم بتبيان تعريفها، وعناصرها، وصفاتها، وأشكالها، ووظيفتها، ودورها في الأدب.
ويتناول دور المفارقة في بناء القصيدة العربية الحديثة، من خلال استعراض أهم أشكالها التي تتجلى في قصائد كل من أمل دنقل، وسعدي يوسف، ومحمود درويش، كالمفارقة اللفظية، والدرامية، والرومنسية، والسقراطية، والحركية، والتنافرية.
ويدرس علاقة المفارقة بالتنقيات النصية: بقفلة القصيدة، والصورة الفنية، والتناص، والإيقاع، مبيناً أثر كل من هذه التقنيات على المفارقة سلباً أو إيجاباً.
ولا يكتفي الباحث بتقديم دراسات نظرية للقضايا التي يتناولها، بل يقدم، بالإضافة إليها، دراسات تطبيقية مقسمة على ثلاث مباحث: الأول حول مفارقة القصيدة وقصيدة المفارقة، والثاني حول القصيدة القصيرة والمفارقة والعلاقة بينهما إن وجدت، والثالث حول ثلاث قصائد مختارة من الشعراء المذكورين قيد الدرس، وهي: "الزيارة" لـ[أمل دنقل]، و"في الشيخوخة قد يبدو الشعر الأبيض أسود" لـ[سعدي يوسف]، و"أنا يوسف يا أبي" لـ[محمود درويش].
