استحوذت المفارقة على إهتمام العديد من الدارسين في الغرب، ويظهر هذا الإهتمام بشكل جلي من خلال تعدد دراساتهم وتنوعها، أما الدراسات العربية في المجال نفسه فما تزال متواضعة مقارنة مع مثيلاتها من الدراسات الغربية، وغالباً ما تظهر في بحوث ومقالات منشورة في دورية أو أخرى، أو في فصل من كتاب أو آخر.
إلا أن قناعة الباحث بأهمية المفارقة في النص الأدبي، شعراً كأن أو نثراً، وحضور مفهوم المفارقة في المادة النقدية القديمة، وقلة الدراسات التي توجهت لدراسة المفارقة في هذه المادة، ذلك كله هو الذي دفع الباحث إلى إختيار المفارقة موضوعاً لدراسته، علّه يكشف بهذه الدراسة عن جانب مستور في تراثنا النقدي، وعساه يكشف من جهة أخرى عن غنى هذا التراث وتراثه.
وفي تصور الباحث فإن دراسة المفارقة اقتضت منه أن يقيم دراسته على أربعة فصول مسبوقة بمقدمة يعرض فيها لأهمية المفارقة والدراسات السابقة ذات الصلة بالمفارقة، أما الفصل الأول فقد كان مدخلاً تاريخياً يُبين مفهوم المفارقة كما في معاجم اللغة، وكما في الدراسات النقدية الحديثة، غربية، وعربية.
وتناول الفصل الثاني المفارقة في النقد العربي القديم، أما الفصل الثالث فقد عالج أشكال المفارقة في النقد العربي القديم، فهما المفارقة اللفظية، ومفارقة الموقف، وأما الفصل الرابع فقد توقف عند أهمية المفارقة ووظائفها في العمل الأدبي وكان الأهم من بين هذه الوظائف أربع هي تقوية النص عن طريق القارئ الذي يرفض المعنى الحرفي للنص بحثاً عن معناه الخفي، وإحداث أبلغ الأثر بأقل الوسائل تبذيراً، والإثارة والمتعة، والتوازن.
