إنَّ الغاية من هذه الدراسة هي كشف ظاهرة المفارقة في شعر محمود درويش، وتَلَمُّس أدواتها الجمالية وهي - في نظري - مهمة شاقة لمسيرةٍ تنطوي على مخاطرة نظراً لإتساع التجربة وتشعبها من جهة، وإستعصاء الفكرة على الحصر وندرة الجهود العربية في هذا المجال من جهة أخرى.
فعلى الرغم من توافر مادة غزيرة تتناول موضوع "المفارقة" نظرياً وتطبيقياً في الكتابات النقدية الغربية، ظَلَّت تتراكم منذ ما يزيد على قرنين؛ فإنّ هذا الموضوع لم يلتفت إليه دارسونا المحدثون بعد، إلاّ القليل منهم، وجاءت مجهوداتهم مُركًّزةً على الجانب النظري، نذكر في هذا المقام دراستين، الأولى للدكتور عبد الواحد لؤلؤة بعنوان "المفارقة وصفاتها" وهي ترجمة لكتاب دي سي ميويك (Irony and the Ironic) (DCMuecke) والثانية، للدكتور خالد سليمان بعنوان "نظرية المفارقة" وقد اعْتَمَدَتْ في قسمٍ كبير منها على سابقتها.
أمّا من الناحية التطبيقية، فالأمر أكثر شُحاً، ففيما عَدا محاولة الدكتور ناصر شبانة الموسومة بــ "المفارقة في الشعر العربي الحديث"، ومجهود الدكتور حسني عبد الجليل يوسف في دراسته المُعَنْونة بــ "المفارقة في شعر عَدي بن زيد العبادي" لا نجد من الدراسات التطبيقية التي تُعنى بهذا الموضوع، إلاّ بعض المحاولات الجزئية التي حاولت إستكشاف المفارقة في قصائد بعينها.
