يتخذ الكتاب من الظاهراتية منطلقاً فلسفياً لدراسة الشاعر العربي الجاهلية، للتعرف إلى طبيعة وجوده الإنساني والبحث في هذه الطبيعة، وفي ما يمثله الشعر الجاهلي تاريخياً وفلسفياً وأدبياً ودينياً، وفي مدى تحقيق الشاعر الجاهلي وجوده في الحياة التي عاشها في عصره.
يسعى الكتاب لتجاوز الصورة النمطية السلبية التي تراكمت عن الشاعر الجاهلي في الرؤى العربية الإسلامية قديماً، ثم في التصورات الاستشراقية الغربية الحديثة التي أسقطت حال بدو العرب في القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر على مجتمع الشاعر الجاهلي قبل الإسلام، باحثاً الكتاب في طبيعة وجود الشاعر الجاهلي بموضوعية وحيادية فلسفية معتمداً الكاتب بذلك على المقاربة الظاهراتية التي يسعى من خلالها لتحقيق الحيادية من جهة ولاعتماد نظرة ذاتية جديدة من جهة أخرى تستبطن الظاهر لتصل إلى الماهية المتوارية خلف المرئي.
يحتوي الكتاب ثلاثة فصول إلى جانب المقدمة والخلاصة العامة والخاتمة. يتناول الفصل الأول: "الإنسان العربي والصحراء: رؤية تاريخية"؛ والفصل الثاني: "المعرفة الشعرية في العصر الجاهلي"؛ والفصل الثالث: "العالم الشعري الجاهلي: الجمال والجلال".
