هذا الكتاب يعكس خبرة أكثر من ربع قرن من العمل المباشر للمؤلف مع المصادر المشعة خاصة الأشعة السينية وتطبيقاتها الطبية والإشراف على رسائل الدراسات العليا فى التشخيص الطبى بالأشعة السينية وكذلك الإشراف على رسائل الماجستير والدكتوراة فى موضوع الأشعة السينية وتدريس الموضوع لطلبة الدراسات العليا فى جامعة بغداد والجامعة المستنصرية وفى قسم الأشعة فى الكلية التقنية الطبية فى بغداد.
يتضمن الكتاب أحد عشر فصلاً الأول: يمثل أساسيات الأشعاع المؤين وتفاعله مع المادة، أما الفصل الثانى: فيشمل مكونات أجهزة الأشعة السينية والأجهزة المساعدة للحصول على صورة ذات نوعية جيدة وبأقل جرعة ممكنة للمريض، والفصل الثالث إلى التاسع: تتضمن بأنواع الأشعة السينية المختلفة وهى الأشعة السينية التقليدية بإستخدام الأفلام، التصوير المقطعى المحوسب، وتصوير الأسنان، الفصل العاشر: والذى يتضمن أهم الأجهزة والإختيارات لضمان الجودة للتشخيص لمختلف أنواع الأجهزة، أما الفصل الأخير: فهو يهتم بأحد تطبيقات التصوير بالأشعة السينية لتفتيش الأشخاص والأمتعة والبضائع عبر المنافذ الحدودية ونقاط التفتيش المختلفة لأهمية التطبيق لمحاربة تهريب المخدرات "المواد النووية" المتفجرات وتهريب المواد الأخرى والحد من العمليات الإرهابية التى تستهدف المدنيين الأبرياء.
يستهدف الكتاب إختصاصى الأشعة من الأطباء الفيزياويين الطبيين، مفتشى الأشعاع، ضباط الوقاية من الأشعاع، أطباء الأسنان، العاملين فى مؤسسات الطاقة الذرية، المصورين الأشعاعيين وموظفو الجمارك وطلبة الدراسات الأولية والعليا فى الفيزياء الأشعاعية، كذلك يجد القارئ غير المتخصص فى هذا الكتاب عوناً فى الفهم العام لإستخدام الأشعة السينية والتى لا تعرضها الكتب المنهجية الأكاديمية المتخصصة إلا فى إطار التخصص الضيق.
