"بجعات برية" رواية تجمع في ثنايا أحداثها بين حميمية المذكرات وملحمية الرواية لتخبر عن قصة نساء ثلاث: يونغ شانغ "جدة الكاتب" المولودة في 1909، أيام الاقطاع في الصين، والتي منحت لأحد أمراء الحرب وجنرالاتها لتكون خليلة، فلم تستطع الهروب من قدرها هذا حتى 1932، عندما أوشك الجنرال أن يموت، ابنتها التي ترعرعت في منشوريا في ظل الاحتلالين الياباني فالروسي.
وحين اندلعت الحرب الأهلية بين الكونتانغ والشيوعيين، انضمت إلى المقاومة السرية وغامرت بحياتها كي تهرّب الأسرار إلى الشيوعيين فتمّ اعتقالها. وعندما أطلق سراحها اقترنت بشيوعي مثلها، وصار الاثنان من موظفي النظام الكبار ومن أهل ثورته. ثم الحفيدة التي تسمت باسم جدتها يونغ تشان، قضت طفولتها في أوساط أصحاب الامتيازات والسلطة، لكن وحشية "الثورة الثقافية" حملتها على التساؤل والشك حتى في ماوتسي تونغ نفسه. أبواها تعرضا للقهر والنفي إلى معسكرات العمل البعيدة، فجنّ والدها، وانطفأ تدريجياً ومات، أما هي، ولما تبلغ العشرين، فنفيت إلى أطراف جبال هملايا.
"بجعات برية" رواية تجعل القارئ يتوغل في الصين، في تصورها كما في سجونها، وفي مشاهدها الجماهيرية الحاشدة كما في مقصورات النساء والخليلات، إنها في آن، عمل مهم من أعمال التاريخ المعاصر، وشهادة غير عادية على الروح الإنسانية.
