ولدت عام 1952، كانت حرساً أحمر لفترة قصيرة وهي في الرابعة عشرة من عمرها، ثم عملت مزارعة و«طبيبة حافية» وعاملة فولاذ وكهربائية ثم طالبة تدرس اللغة الانكليزية، ثم مساعدة محاضر في جامعة سيشوان.
غادرت الصين لبريطانيا في 1978، حيث نالت شهادة الدكتوراه في اللسانيات في عام 1982 من جامعة «يورك».
وبذلك تكون أول صينية تنال شهادة الدكتوراه في جامعة بريطانية.

وصف رواية بجعات برية دراما الصين في حياة نساء ثلاث تأليف (يونغ تشانغ) :
تجمع هذه الرواية بين حميمية المذكرات وملحميّة الرواية، لتخبرنا قصة نساء ثلاث:يونغ تشانغ، جدة الكاتبة، المولودة في 1909 أيام الإقطاع في الصين، والتي مُنحت لأحد أمراء الحرب وجنرالاتها لتكون خليلته، فلم تستطع الهرب من قدرها هذا حتى 1932، عندما أوشك الجنرال أن يموت.وابنتها التي ترعرعت في منشوريا في ظل الاحتلالين الياباني فالروسي. وحين اندلعت الحرب الأهلية بين الكومنتانغ والشيوعيين، انضمت إلى المقاومة السرية وغامرت بحياتها كي تهرّب الأسرار إلى الشيوعيين فتم اعتقالها. وعندما أطلق سراحها اقترنت بشيوعي مثلها، وصار الاثنان من موظفي النظام الكبار ومن أهل ثورته.و أيضا الحفيدة التي تسمّت باسم جدتها يونغ تشانغ، قضت طفولتها في أوساط أصحاب الامتيازات والسلطة، لكن وحشية الثورة الثقافية حملتها على التساؤل والشكّ حتى في ماوتسي تونغ نفسه. أبواها تعرضا للقهر والنفي إلى معسكرات العمل البعيدة، فجنّ والدها، وانطفأ تدريجياً ومات. أما هي، ولما تبلغ العشرين، فنفيت إلى أطراف جبال هملايا.
