لا ينطلقُ كارل ساندبرغ في شِعْرِهِ، يُفصِّل سامر أبو هوَّاش في مقدمة الكتاب، من نظريَّةٍ جاهزةٍ حولَ الكتابةِ الشِّعْرِيَّة، لا يفترضُ نفسَهُ سليلَ تقاليدَ شِعْرِيَّةٍ راسخةٍ، ولا ثائراً عليها، ولا فاتحَ دروبٍ جديدةً، وقد يبدو هذا مُستغرَباً بعضَ الشَّيءِ، في وقتٍ كان الغربُ برُمَّتِهِ، قبلَ الحربِ العالميَّةِ الأولى وخلالها وبعدها، يغلي بالتَّيَّاراتِ الأدبيَّةِ والفكريَّ لا ينطلقُ كارل ساندبرغ في شِعْرِهِ، يُفصِّل سامر أبو هوَّاش في مقدمة الكتاب، من نظريَّةٍ جاهزةٍ حولَ الكتابةِ الشِّعْرِيَّة، لا يفترضُ نفسَهُ سليلَ تقاليدَ شِعْرِيَّةٍ راسخةٍ، ولا ثائراً عليها، ولا فاتحَ دروبٍ جديدةً، وقد يبدو هذا مُستغرَباً بعضَ الشَّيءِ، في وقتٍ كان الغربُ برُمَّتِهِ، قبلَ الحربِ العالميَّةِ الأولى وخلالها وبعدها، يغلي بالتَّيَّاراتِ الأدبيَّةِ والفكريَّةِ والفلسفيَّةِ والفنِّيَّةِ، التي سَعَتْ إلى إعادةِ تعريفِ الشَّرطِ الإنسانيِّ، تحتَ وطأةِ الثَّورةِ الصِّناعيَّةِ، وما أحدثتْهُ من تحوُّلاتٍ هائلةٍ في الوَعيِ الجَمْعِيِّ، وفي العلاقاتِ الاجتماعيَّةِ، وفي بنيةِ السلطةِ السِّياسيَّةِ والدِّينيَّةِ والأبويَّةِ، إلَّا أنَّ ساندبرغ لا يبدو مشغولاً بكلِّ هذه الانشغالاتِ، إذ لا يأتي على ذِكْرِ الحداثةِ (أو التقليد) إلَّا عَرَضَاً، متوقِّفاً فقط عند الاشتراطاتِ الشَّكْلِيَّةِ التي تفرضُها القافيةُ على الشِّعْرِ، دون أنْ يُحدِّدَ موقفاً واضحاً من القصيدةِ الكلاسيكيَّةِ، ودون أنْ يتبنَّى، على نحوٍ أيديولوجيٍّ، أيَّ نَمَطٍ من أنماطِ الحداثةِ، بما في ذلك الشِّعْرُ الحُرّ.
ويضيف أبو هوَّاش: قارئُ ساندبرغ، وليس، فقط، ديوانَهُ الأشهرَ ربَّما "قصائد شيكاغو"، سيلمسُ شَغَفَهُ الكبيرَ بالمدينةِ، إذ إنَّ المدينةَ، بكلِّ ما تحفلُ به من تناقُضاتٍ ومشهديَّاتٍ، هي المسرحُ الذي تتكشَّفُ من خلالِهِ فُصُولُ القصَّةِ الجديدةِ التي يريدُ أن يُسْمِعَ صوتَها، ويُوصِلَهُ، وهي ليست قصَّةَ الأُناسِ الكادحين فحسب، بل، أيضاً، قصَّةَ الفردِ العاديِّ، بتقلُّباتِهِ، وصراعاتِهِ، وضَجَرِهِ الوُجُوديِّ، وبَحْثِهِ عن معنىً لحياتِهِ، وهي، أيضاً، قصَّةُ جيلٍ شهدَ حربَيْن عالميَّتَيْن، وشاركَ وتأثَّرَ بهما. ولعلَّ هذا الجانبَ في تجربةِ ساندبرغ، إضافةً إلى خلفيَّتِهِ السِّياسيَّةِ الاشتراكيَّةِ، وتجربتِهِ المِهَنِيَّةِ في عالَمِ الصّحافةِ التي مارسَها لعُقُودٍ، هي التي جَعَلَتْهُ يكتبُ باكراً، ودون قَصْدِيَّةٍ واضحةٍ، قصيدةَ النَّثْرِ، ومَنَحَتْ صوتَهُ تلك الخُصُوصيَّةَ والقوَّةَ اللَّتَيْن جَعَلَتَاهُ يُؤثِّر في الأجيالِ اللَّاحقةِ من الشُّعراءِ الأمريكيِّيْن، بمَنْ فيهم خُصُوصاً شعراءَ "جيل البيت" من أمثال ألن غينسبرغ وغريغوري كورسو، وغيرهما.
