في غابات البلوط الموحشة، مطلاً على البحيرة، قديماً كان يتعزل راهب متنسك طوال يومه في مشاغل صارمة، صائماً متعبداً، مجهداً نفسه في العمل. وبحجرته العتيقة. كان الشيخ قد حفر قبره بيديه، وفي توسلاته إلى قديسيه المعززين ما من مطمح له غير الأهل المنتظر".
حين بدأ بوشكين أولى خطواته الشعرية في الطريق الأدبي، ناشراً بضع قصائد عام 1815، كان الأدب لمّا يزل رازحاً تحت أعباء الكلاسيكية الثقيلة، وقد تحولت بعد لوم ونسوف وجيله إلى شكلية زائفة. لقد مرً القرن الثامن عشر، ولما يزل الأدب الدرسي مختنقاً في هذه الوهدة من التقاليد والتزمت والتصنع. كان الأدب إنما يكتب من الأرستقراطية المتنفذة... ولها. كان جافاً وبعيداً عن أي هواء شعبي باعث على الحيوية.كانت لغتهم متعالية ومتبجحة بابتعادها عن لغة الشعب، غير أن هناك من كان يحاول أن يجدد وكان هذا قبيل بوشكين. لقد بدأت قلّة من الأدباء: كرمزين وجوكوفسكي خاصة.. بالتنغس، غير بعيد كثيراً عن هذه الرهدة الأدبية واللغوية الخانقة... متأثرين باتجاه الرقة العاطفية والحركة الرومانسية. حاولت هذه القلة أن تنأى عن الأساليب المصطنعة السائدة، جاهدة أن تقترب من أشكال فنية ولغة أدبية أكثر مرونة ولطفاً. كان يهمها أن ترسم صوراً عن عالم الإنسان الداخلي... أكثر مما يهمها اتباع الطرق الأدبية الساكنة "المسجلة" في الوسط الرسمي. كانت مهمة بورشكين، إذن، وعرة, "هائلة".
كان من الغريب المدهش أن يتحمل أعباء هذه المهمة شاعر واحد ... وهي التي تتطلب جهود جيل بأكمله. لقد اجتاز بوشكين الوحدة اللغوية والفنية المتكاثفة عبر قرن كامل بخطوة واحدة ليبدأ طريقه الشعري الجديد. بداً نظراً متدفقاً أشبه بالنبتة اليافعة المتدفقة خضرة وحيوية في غابة جرداء خاوية كما يبدو، إلا من محاولات اخضرار ضئيلة.كان من الجائز أن تتعثر وتنطوي على نفسها، وتذبل أخيراً. ليس غريباً، إذن، أن تكون إبراعاته في الشعر والمسرح والقصة هي الأول من نوعه في الأدب الدرسي: عوقاً وجمالاً وحيوية. ولهذا أيضاً كان منذ الخطوات الأولى ظاهرة أدبية فريدة التف حولها الشباب القارئ الطامح في حماس ومحبة بالغين.
