إن حساسية البحث في المسألة الطائفية في زمننا المعاصر، يصعّب على الكاتب عمله، لأن البحث إن لم يكن موضوعياً فقد قيمته وتحول إلى عمل دَعَوي، أو إيديولوجي يسهم في تعميق المشكلة بدل فهمها ومعالجتها. وهذه الصعوبة اضطرتني لتوسيع البحث، في ظل قلة المراجع، إلى حد أن الكتاب تضخّم أكثر بكثير مما كنت أتوقع. ولكن كان لابد لي أن أطل على معظم المشاكل المعاصرة معتبراً أن هذه الدراسة مجرد إن حساسية البحث في المسألة الطائفية في زمننا المعاصر، يصعّب على الكاتب عمله، لأن البحث إن لم يكن موضوعياً فقد قيمته وتحول إلى عمل دَعَوي، أو إيديولوجي يسهم في تعميق المشكلة بدل فهمها ومعالجتها. وهذه الصعوبة اضطرتني لتوسيع البحث، في ظل قلة المراجع، إلى حد أن الكتاب تضخّم أكثر بكثير مما كنت أتوقع. ولكن كان لابد لي أن أطل على معظم المشاكل المعاصرة معتبراً أن هذه الدراسة مجرد مساهمة في مناقشة مسألة تقضّ مضجع الجميع، حكاماً ومحكومين. مسألة يرتبط فيها التاريخ بالانقسامات الإثنية المعاصرة، فالجميع يبحثون عن انتصارات يتغنون بها مع أن الخوض في هذا التاريخ مشحون بالمرارات والاصطفافات التي لا تنتهي داخل الهويات، وداخل فروعها، وما يتفرع عنها.. مما يزيد في تعميق الصراعات بين الشعوب وبين الجماعات والدول. وبقدر ما حاولت أن أجعل هذه الدراسة مرتكزة على التاريخ الاجتماعي المعاصر، إلا أن الباحث لا يستطيع الهروب مما أسّسه التاريخ وعمّقه الحاضر وأقلقه الخوف على المستقبل.
