بمجيء القرن التاسع عشر، وظهور شخصية من أهم شخصيات هذا القرن ألا وهي محمد علي باشا، شهدت البلاد تقدماً في النواحي الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والعلمية وحتى السياسية والعسكرية، وإن لم يكن يهمنا غير الناحية العسكرية، التي برع فيها أشد براعة من حيث تأسيسها، وتطورها، وإعداد الجيوش ليناطح بها القوى الأوروبية الكبرى آنذاك إنجلترا وفرنسا، فأصبح بذلك كالشوكة الشائكة في جانبيها.
وليس هذا بمجيء القرن التاسع عشر، وظهور شخصية من أهم شخصيات هذا القرن ألا وهي محمد علي باشا، شهدت البلاد تقدماً في النواحي الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والعلمية وحتى السياسية والعسكرية، وإن لم يكن يهمنا غير الناحية العسكرية، التي برع فيها أشد براعة من حيث تأسيسها، وتطورها، وإعداد الجيوش ليناطح بها القوى الأوروبية الكبرى آنذاك إنجلترا وفرنسا، فأصبح بذلك كالشوكة الشائكة في جانبيها.
وليس هذا وحسب بل نراه يرسل بجيوشه بناء على رغبات السلطان العثماني في استانبول، ليقضي على كل حركة مناهضة للباب العالي، وقد تبين هذا من خلال تلك الجيوش التي أعدها تحت قيادة ولديه طوسون باشا، ثم إبراهيم باشا من بعده لإسقاط الدولة السعودية الأولى والقضاء على الحركة الوهابية – على أراضي شبه الجزيرة العربية – التي ذاع صيتها في كافة الأرجاء، والإستيلاء على العاصمة الدرعية، ولم يحدث هذا إلا بمشقة بالغة وخسائر فادحة سواء في المعدات أو حتى في الأرواح.
ومن الجدير بالملاحظة القول بأن تلك الحملات التي قادها أبناء محمد علي على أراضي شبه الجزيرة العربية تجاه الدرعية لإسقاطها قد مرت بالعديد من المدن والبلدان، منها ما خضع لهذه الجيوش لقلة عدد ساكنيها وما لديهم من دفاعات، ومنهم من وقف حجرة عثرة أمام تقدم هذه الجحافل الجرارة، وكان من تلك البلدان بلدة الرس أكبر بلدان غرب إقليم القصيم، والواقعة إلى الشمال الشرقي من المدينة المنورة، والتي عدت كالحصن الحصين أمام هجمات جيوش محمد علي باشا وأبناءه، ولعبت دوراً بطولياً برجالاتها الأشداء، لصد تلك الهجمات عليهم، وإبعادهم عن الدرعية.
