ما من فكرة سيطرت على مخيلة العرب أوعبرت عن آمالهم في القرن العشرين كفكرة القومية العربية، و قد لا يكون موضوع استأثر كما استأثرت باهتمام المؤرخين في الشرق الأوسط. لكن، بينما قام مؤرخون كثيرون باستكشاف مصادر القومية العربية ، فإن قليلين اهتموا بدراسة البيئة الاجتماعية و السياسية التي تطورت فيها هذه الفكرة لتصبح حركة ايديولوجية . و تحاول هذه الدراسة تصحيح هذا الخلل و سد هذه ا ما من فكرة سيطرت على مخيلة العرب أوعبرت عن آمالهم في القرن العشرين كفكرة القومية العربية، و قد لا يكون موضوع استأثر كما استأثرت باهتمام المؤرخين في الشرق الأوسط. لكن، بينما قام مؤرخون كثيرون باستكشاف مصادر القومية العربية ، فإن قليلين اهتموا بدراسة البيئة الاجتماعية و السياسية التي تطورت فيها هذه الفكرة لتصبح حركة ايديولوجية . و تحاول هذه الدراسة تصحيح هذا الخلل و سد هذه الثغرة .
وتركز الدراسة على الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية في دمشق العثمانية، و بشكل أخص على عائلات كبار الأعيان في المدينة , و التي كان لها أن تلعب دورا لا يتناسب مع حجمها في التفعيل السياسي لفكرة القومية العربية قبل الحرب العالمية الأولى. و يكشف الكتاب الطرق التي كان فيها لعوامل بعيدة المدى , كإعادة التكوين العثماني و التوسع الاقتصادي الأوروبي و تحول الزراعة باتجاه التجارة في سوريا , أن تشجع ظهور شبكات من العائلات النافذة محليا في دمشق , و المتنافسة و المختلفة و المتمايزة اجتماعيا , لتكون طبقة عليا متماسكة اجتماعيا . و لقد أنتجت هذه الطبقة من ملاك الأراضي و البيروقراطيين , في ظل سلطة عثمانية مركزية متزايدة النشاط , زعامة مدينية جديدة سيطرت على السياسة المحلية بعد العام 1860.
