تسعى هذه الدراسة القيمة إلى إظهار الملامح البارزة التي أخذت باهتمام الرحالة السفراء إلى أوروبا، فكان كل منهم يبني ويهدم، مستحضراً على الدوام المرجعية الأم، ومن ثم كان يستعصي على هذه الحاكي الفهم الموضوعي للثقافة والمجتمع المتفرج عليه، فقد اهتم الحجري بمعاناة الطائفة المورسكية، فوظف كل قدراته من أجل التعرف على معاناة المورسكيين، والتعرف بها في أوروبا، وتأثر ابن عثمان وقبله الغزال بظرفيات عصرهما، فجاءت كتابتهما انعكاساً لها: فك الأسرى، وإبرام معاهدات الصلح التي شكلت أساس سياسة السلطان المغربي محمد بن عبد الله خلال النصف الثاني من القرن الثامن عشر، غير أن إرادة هذا السلطان لم تنجح في تحقيق الانفتاح، لأن أوروبا كانت تهدف إلى السيطرة على العوالم الأخرى، وتحقق لها ذلك بالتدريج. كانت رحلات السفراء في القرن التاسع عشر ترمي إلى التخفيف من وطأة السطو الأوروبي المتزايد، والذي سينتهي بفرض الحماية على المغرب، وجاءت رحلة عبد السلام السايح لتقبل بالأمر الواقع، فطالب بالتساكن والتسامح، وبحث عن جذور في تاريخ العلاقات المغربية الفرنسية. اعتمدت هذه الدراسة منطق الكتابة التاريخية المفتوحة، وسعت إلى دراسة علاقات المغرب بأوروبا في المدى الطويل، من دون إغفال لظرفيات كل رحلة على حدة، لتثبت، في النهاية أن كتابة الرحلة تعتبر من المصادر المعول عليها في كتابة التاريخ.
