"كان معظم الفرنسيين يفكرون مثل بوسوييه (Bossuet)، وفجأة أصبحوا يفكرون مثل فولتير (Voltaire): إنها لثورة". بين سنة 1680 وسنة 1715، كانت الأفكار الأكثر تناقضاً تتجابه، والنظام الكلاسيكي الذي استرجع قواه بعد عصر النهضة كان يبدو أبدياً. وعلى الرغم من ذلك، وبعد العام 1680 أصبح كل شيّ يتحرك. لقد بدا وكأنّ ريحاً خارجية تهبّ على النظام الرسمي؛ فقد أصبح لبعض العقول الجرأة على الادعاء بأنّ الفلاسفة الحديثين يوازون الأقدمين وأنه يجب أن يتغلّب التقدّم على التقليد. كان ذلك العصر عصراً مفصلياً حيث أمسى المرء يناقش في الثورات وفي حقيقة النصوص المقدسة وفي الأسرار، وراح أحرار التفكير يحاربون التقليد، ويتكلمون على الحق الطبيعي ويحلمون بعصر من السعادة المبنية على العقل وعلى العلم. إنّ هذا الغليان المذهل للأفكار وللرجال هو ما يعرضه ويحلله "بول هازار" في هذا الكتاب الذي أصبح كلاسيكياً، وهو إن صحّ القول، يعيد كتابة تاريخ أصول أوروبا المعاصرة
