يحاول هذا الكتاب، في منشأ القصد ومنتهاه، أي يجيب عن السؤال التالي: ما صورة العربية في اللسانيات الأمريكية؟ ويتفرع عن هذا السؤال الكلي أسئلة تفصيلية: ما ملامح "العربية" في مرآة "علماء اللسانيات في أمريكا؟" ما موارد العربية في مؤلفاتهم اللسانية الأصول بمناهجها المتعاقبة ما مقدار "إطلاعهم" على "أنظار" علماء العربية؟، ما مقدار الانتفاع بأنظارهم هم في مقاربة العربية برؤية "إضافية"؟ ما موقفهم من العربية من حيث هي ظاهرة لغوية؟ ما موقفهم من العربية من حيث هي وعاء لمحمول ثقافي حضاري؟
استحوذت اللسانيات الغربية عامة واللسانيات الأمريكية خاصة على الدراسات اللغوية العربية، ولا سيما بعد ظهور النظرية التوليدية التحويلية، وأصبح تطبيق المقولات النظرية المستفادة من تلك اللسانيات بمدارسها المختلفة المتعاقبة -ولا يزال- تيارً سائداً وعنواناً رئيساً في اتجاهات الدرس اللغوي في العربية.
وإذا كانت تلك الدراسات تتلمس صورة العربية بمرآة الآخر كما نراها نحن، فإنّ هذا الكتاب يتخذ منحىً مقابلاً، إذ إنه يتلمس صورة العربية في مرآة الآخر كما يراها هو.
ويستقري الكتاب، في هذه السبيل، موارد العربية في أعمال الأعلام من اللسانيين الأمريكيين كبلومفيلد، وسايير، وهياكاوا، وزليج هاريس، وفي كتب اللسانيات الأصول "الأمهات" التي وضعها هؤلاء وغيرهم، كما يستقري موارد العربية لدى المدارس اللسانية المتعاقبة هناك.
ولعلّ هذه المقابلة تسهم في توجيه العلاقة بين العربية واللسانيات الأمريكية توجيهاً متوازناً، وتفتح أفقاً جديداً لهذه العلاقة يتجاوز الإفادة بالإتباع إلى الإضافة بالابتداع.
