ظهر أول محفل ماسوني في دمشق في نيسان عام 1868، ونشطت الماسونية في المجتمع الدمشقي حتى صيف عام 1965، في خلال ما قارب مئة عام، دخل في عشيرة البنائين الأحرار عدد كبير من نخبة رجال السياسة والعلم.
بعد إحتلال فلسطين عام 1948، بدأت الماسونية تتراجع في المجتمع السوري، ووجهت إليها إتهامات بالجاسوسية والتآمر والسعي إلى فرض حكمها على المشرق العربي، الماسون الدمشقيون تركوا الباب مفتوحاً أمام كل هذه الإتهامات، وبقي السؤال: هل كانت الماسونية حقاً حصان طروادة للصهيونية العالمية؟... وهل كان ماسون دمشق يسعون حقاً إلى أن يحكموا العالم.
على الرغم، من أنهم لم يفلحوا حتى في حكم مدينتهم طويلاً؟... هل كانت الماسونية شراً في دمشق؟... أم تنظيماً أهلياً حمل أوزار سنوات من القهر والفشل والأحلام الضائعة؟... هل كان الماسون الدمشقيون رجالاً أفاضل يسعون إلى تطوير مجتمعهم، أم أن الماسونية استخدمتهم لتحسين صورتها في المشرق العربي؟...
