هو الابن الأول للصحفي الأشهر نجيب الريس من زوجته الثالثة راسمه سمينة ذات الأصول التركية علي الأغلب لم تكن متعلمة غير أنها تجيد القراءة والكتابة، يصفها ولدها بأنها كانت حادة الذكاء، وهو ليس مجرد وصف فيه انحياز للأم فقد أثبتت هذه الصفة عندما تعلمت من زوجها الصحفي والسياسي طوال 15 عام كل ما يمكن للمرء أن يتعلمه من أمور السياسة والصحافة، وقد مكنها ذلك أن تدير جريدة القبس لست سنوات بعد وفاة زوجها وفي ظروف سياسية صعبة مما أدهش الوسط الصحفي والسياسي.
في هذا الجو ينشأ الفتي وتكون القبس أول جريدة يمارس فيها خطواته العملية الأولي وذلك بعد التدريب الذي تلقاه في مدرسة برمانا التي كانت قد اكتسبت سمعة جيدة في أوساط الوجهاء السوريين فهي تتبع النمط الانجليزي الذي كان قد بدأ في اجتذاب أنصار عديدين _من ضمنهم والد المؤلف* في مواجهة النمط السائد للمستعمر الفرنسي.
في هذه المدرسة يتلقي رياض الريس خبرات عديدة في السياسة والصحافة والفن فقد كانت تضم نخبة النخبة وهو ما جعلها قبلة عائلات الطبقة البرجوازية المتوسطة في مختلف أنحاء البلدان العربية، يفهم المؤلف هناك السياسة من خلال الممارسة عندما يضرب مع زملائه الإضراب احتجاجا علي رفض رئيس المدرسة المستر دوبينغ تعطيل الدراسة يوم 22 آذار وهو عيد تأسيس الجامعة العربية.
كما أنه هناك يتعلم علي يد أحد المعلمين حب الشعر ويفهم علم العروض ويبدأ في قراءة التراث والأدب المعاصر، وفي برمانا يقوم مع زملائه بتجربة إصدار جرائد ومجلات....كان القدر يهيئه تماما لما سيكون عليه بعد ذلك.
