يتحقق الباحث في كتاب الدلة الأموية في الشام، أننا لم نقسم فصوله حسب السنين أو الملوك أو الحادثات أو الفتن والحروب كما فعل غيرنا، ولم نهتم في جمع الحقائق حولها فنجعلها نقطة الدائرة أو المحور الذي يدور عليه كلامنا.
بل رتبنا كتابنا هذا حسب حركات نعتقد أنها صورة حية للمبادئ والأفكار والأعمال التي قام بها الأمويون في العصر الذي سادوا فيه وتغلبت مدينتهم على العالم المعروف يومذاك، إننا أقدمنا على كتابة التاريخ على هذا النمط لأننا نعتقد أن التاريخ سلسلة حركات مستديمة متصلة مشتبكة يأخذ بعضها برقاب بعض، وهي تربط الماضي بالحاضر والحاضر بالمستقبل وتظهر الصلة بينها في رقي الجماعات الإنسانية في البيئات المختلفة.
كان جلّ إعتمادنا على المصادر التي تراها في الكتاب إنما رجعنا لدى تضارب الروايات إلى الطبري لصدق إسناده ولتحرّيه الحقائق من ينابيعها، فهو من أولئك المؤرخين الذين ينقلون لك التاريخ كما تركه السلف، قال: "لم نقصد بكتابنا هذا قصد الإحتجاج... وليعلم الناظر في كتابنا هذا أن إعتمادي في كل ما أحضرت ذكره... إنما هو على ما رويت من الأخبار... والآثار التي مسندها إلى رواتها... إذ كان العلم بما كان من أخبار الماضين وما هو كائن من أنباء الحادثين غير واصل إلى من لم يشاهدهم ولم يدرك زمانهم إلا بأخبار المخبرين ونقل الناقلين دون الإستخراج بالعقول... وليعلم أنه لم يؤت ذلك قبلنا وإنما أوتي من قبل بعض ناقليه إلينا وإنّا إنما نؤديه لك على نحو ما أدّي إلينا".
ثم إننا جرّبنا أن نُعمل العقل والبصيرة فيما كتبناه فلم نشد بفضل أناس ليسوا من الفضل في شيء، ولم نجعل بعلاقاتنا الدينية والطائفية والسياسية والإجتماعية تأثيراً في تدويننا التاريخ، ولم يكتب هذه الصفحات والصبغة التقديسية للسلف هدفنا، والحق أننا أردنا أن نثبت الحقائق ونفسرها حسب إجتهادنا ونحن بعيدون جدّ البعد عن التعصب فإن وفّقنا في هذا العمل الصغير فحسبنا هذا التوفيق في خدمة العرب.
