معظم هذا الكتاب، حسب المؤلف، هو خلاصة الفترة التي قضاها بين 1965 و 1970 مدرساً للغة الإنجليزية في العنيزة - وهي بلدة صغيرة في المملكة العربية السعودية؛ فهو يصف، في سلسلة من القصص المسلّية، حياة البلدة اليومية وعادات أهلها وتقاليدهم، كذلك العلاقة التي كانت تجمعه بالزملاء المدرسين وبالطلاب في المدرسة الثانوية تلك، وصولاً إلى الأحداث التي أدّت إلى خروجه القسري من البلدة التي كان يعتبرها بيته، وعملية نقله إلى الرياض، وإنتهاء بمغادرة العربية السعودية كلياً.
كانت العنيزة، في ستينيات القرن الماضي، لا تزال تعيش، جزئياً على الأقل، في عصر شارلز دويت وهو من مستكشفي القرن التاسع عشر، وكان قد مكث في البلدة لبضعة أسابيع سنة 1870، رغم أنها تغيرت معمارياً في القرون اللاحقة.
(وقد اتيح للمؤلف أن يحتسي قهوته في الغرفة نفسها التي حلّ بها دويتي ضيفاً على مائدة إفطار في البلدة قبل ما يقارب المئة عام)، إلا أنه الآن منتصف القرن العشرين، ما يعني أن السكان كانوا على دراية واسعة مما كان يجري في العالم كما أنهم كانوا قد انخرطوا بقوة في أحداث المنطقة، وانعكس الإنخراط ذاك في الفصل الذي خصّص للسياسة العربية الداخلية، وبخاصة حرب الأيام الستة في حزيران 1967، مسبّباتها وتداعياتها.
لكن رواية الكاتب لا تنتهي عند عام 1970، فـ "في الطريق إلى مكة" يكتب الكاتب عن التحول من اللاأدْرية إلى الإسلام ويعود الفضل في ذلك إلى أداء مناسك الحج في مكة المكرمة سنة 1996، برفقة أحد كبار تلاميذه زمن الستينيات.
أخيراً، في "العودة إلى العنيزة" يصف المؤلف البلدة كما غدت في القرن الواحد والعشرين، وذلك في أثناء عودته إليها سنة 2011، لكن العنيزة، ورغم التحوّل المادي الذي أصابها، وقد بدا ذلك في عماراتها الجديدة الخرسانية والزجاجية ومطاعم الوجبات السريعة فيها، تبقى مختلفة عمّا يظهر على السطح فيها: فهي لا تزال تحتفظ بطابعها الإجتماعي الحميم وبلطفها الساحر.
