يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يوحي للقارئ بفكرة خلاصتها أن الخيال الفني والأدبي هو صنف من أصناف الحرية فعلاً لا لأنه يأخذ الإنسان إلى حيث لا بؤس ولا ألم ولا صراع بل لأنه يحرر الطاقات المركوزة في قاع النفس ويوظفها في فسحة الفعل الحر القادر على الإبداع أو الخلق الفني.
ولكن العلاقة بين الخيال والحرية هي علاقة تأثر و تأثير متبادلين؛ وهذا يعني أن الخيال يصنع الحرية تماماً، بقدر ما يتاح للحرية من فرصة لتصنع الخيال.
ومن شأن مثل هذا المبدأ أن يفضي إلى أن قوة الخيال التي تسهم بتأسيس الحرية، تبقى حاجة إلى الحرية كي يتمكن فعل التخيّل من أن يمارس الخلق والإبتكار.
