الدكتور مصطفى سويف هو أستاذ علم نفس مصري بكلية آداب جامعة القاهرة. له العديد من المؤلفات والدراسات في مجال علم النفس. شغل منصب رئيس الجمعية المصرية للدراسات النفسية عامي 1970 و1971، وهو مؤسس أكاديمية الفنون المصرية وأول رئيس لها بين عامي 1968 و1971.

هذا الكتاب محاولة علمية دقيقة لإقامة نظرية في طبيعة العمليات النفسية الإجتماعية التي تربط الفرد بمجتمعه.
ولكي تكون النظرة شاملة ومتعمقة كان من الضروري أن تتناول هذه العمليات من زاوية تطورية أو ارتقائية من ناحية, ثم من زاوية تشريح المواقف الإنسانية الرئيسية من ناحية أخرى. لذلك كانت الخطوة الأولى هي الكشف عن الجذور العميقة للصلة بين الفرد والجماعة في المستويات التطورية المختل هذا الكتاب محاولة علمية دقيقة لإقامة نظرية في طبيعة العمليات النفسية الإجتماعية التي تربط الفرد بمجتمعه.
ولكي تكون النظرة شاملة ومتعمقة كان من الضروري أن تتناول هذه العمليات من زاوية تطورية أو ارتقائية من ناحية, ثم من زاوية تشريح المواقف الإنسانية الرئيسية من ناحية أخرى. لذلك كانت الخطوة الأولى هي الكشف عن الجذور العميقة للصلة بين الفرد والجماعة في المستويات التطورية المختلفة, على أساس أن هذه الصلة في أي شكل من أشكالها إن هي إلا مظهر من مظاهر القدرة على التكيف التي هي من أهم خصائص المادة الحية. ثم كانت الخطوة التالية وهي تتمثل في متابعة المراحل الرئيسية التي تمر بها الشخصية في ارتقائها من حيث أن هذه المراحل نتاج التفاعل بين الفرد بقدراته واستعداداته الجبلية وبين خصائص التنشئة الإجتماعية التي يتلقاها. وقد أقام المؤلف دراسته في هذه الفصول على أساس من ملاحظاته الدقيقة المتتابعة التي أجراها على طفلته في البيئة المصرية. كما اعتمد في دراسته لمرحلة المراهقة وخصائصها الإجتماعية على دراسة تجريبية إحصائية أجراها على أكثر من ألف مراهق مصري.
وكان طبيعيا أن ينتقل المؤلف بعد هذه النظرة التاريخية إلى نظرة تحليلية يكشف فيها عن شبكة العلاقات في المواقف الإجتماعية الإنسانية الرئيسية, وبذلك يكشف عن عوامل التكامل الإجتماعي وشروطه, العوامل والشروط الحاضرة والتاريخية معا
