مسارُ هذا الكتاب هو سلسلةً متتابعة من الرؤى التي تتمحور، من أول العمل إلى آخره، حول سؤالين توأمين؟ أولهما: ما الذي يشكّل وحدةَ المجتمع؟ وهو سؤال يحاول بعض الكتاب المعاصرين الإجابة عنه من خلال دمج "الإنسان الاقتصادي" (Homo economicus) لِبنْتام مع "الإنسان الاجتماعي" (Homo Sociologicus) لدوركهايم. أما السؤال الثاني فهو: كيف يحدث، رغم هذه الوحدة التي يبدو أن لا حياة إنسانية ممكنة خارجاً عنها، أننا نعيش كما نحلم، فرادى، تبعاً لقول كونْراد؟ وهو سؤال تتم الإجابة عليه عادة بشكل متعثر من خلال الكلام عن التضحيات التي تفرضها الحضارة على الفرد، ومن خلال ما تمليه من مكبوتات.
