تنقسم الشهادات المضمومة في هذا الكتاب إلى مجموعتين مصنفتين تحت عنوان "المنفى" و"الثورة". تسبق حكايات المنفى حكايات الثورة، لكنها جميعها تتألف في حالة عشق للوطن. عشق يتبدى في رؤية الوطن أنّى ذهب الشاهد، وفي كل ما يشاهده. غنها حالة تبلور، بالمصطلح النقدي المستخدم في وصف الحب الطاغي لدى موباسان ومن تبعه على نهجه الأدبي.
