رتنقسم الشهادات المضمومة في هذا الكتاب إلى مجموعتين مصنفتين تحت عنواني "المنفى" و "الثورة" . تسبق حكايات المنفى حكايات الثورة، لكنها جميعها تتآلف في حالة عشق للوطن. عشق يتبدى في رؤية الوطن أنّى ذهب الشاهد، وفي كل ما يشاهده. إنها حالة (تبلور)، بالمصطلح النقدي المستخدم في وصف الحب الطاغي لدى (موباسان) ومن تبعه على نهجه الأدبي.
الحكايات كلها لشاهد أنهى دراسته الجامعية في الغرب وبقي يهرب من منفى إلى منفى، وكله يقين بأن "لا قناديل نشعلها في المنافي، لا نور في المنافي، لا قناديل تهدينا. قنديل أم هاشم في الوطن فقط.
